What is Earth Science?

Earth science (also known as geoscience) is a program that focuses on the study of the planet Earth, the forces acting upon it, and the behavior of the solids, liquids and gases comprising it.  In general, it uses an interdisciplinary approach, meaning that it includes some aspects of physics, geography, mathematics, chemistry, and biology.  Some of the specialized areas of instruction include: geology (study of the rocky parts of the Earth's crust), oceanography and hydrology (marine and freshwater systems), and atmospheric sciences (weather and climate).

Specialized areas of interest might include geomorphology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, mineralogy, petrology, geostatistics, volcanology, glaciology and geophysical principles.
