2003-2004 Classroom Management
Mr. Ross - Room 61

Textbook:

My textbook is an important and expensive part of my education.  I am expected to take good care of my textbook.  I am expected to put a cover on my textbook and, before final exams can be taken, to pay for any damages to the textbook.

Notebook:

I am expected to take notes during class.  These notes shall consist of information that is

  • given orally,
  • written on the chalkboard,
  • put on the overhead,
  • received as part of a film/video or
  • communicated to me by any other method.

I will be expected to keep these notes, along with my other Science work such as hand-outs, homework, labs, quizzes, tests, and a copy of this contract in an organized notebook.

Labs:

The Science Laboratory experience is necessarily an integral part of the class and an important addition to the learning process. As such, all students shall be required to maintain a (separate) 3-ring notebook containing - depending on the course - all Labs, Vocabulary Definitions, Journal/Diary Entries and Reviews of news articles - appropriately word processed - that shall be turned in at the end of the semester.  Said collection of labs shall constitute approximately 30% of my final grade.

Note:  This CMP shall be placed at the very beginning of the student's Science Notebook for handy reference.

Class Policies:

Class policies generally are not different from those listed in the student handbook. However, take special note of the following:

  • Tardy: I am expected to be in my assigned seat when the bell rings. (See student handbook)
  • Leaving Class: Please carry your Kaneland agenda/planner with you at all times; without it you will NOT be allowed to leave the room for any reason.
  • Food/Beverage: Keep all food and drink out of the classroom/lab.
  • Attire: See student handbook and Lab Safety Contract.  Please pay special attention to the section that reads (on page 68): "All students shall dress in a manner that reflects self-respect"  Students not adhering to this policy shall be sent to the office.
  • Class Study Time: I am expected to utilize 100% of the class time available.  Unless otherwise directed, any study time given during class is defined as quiet time and shall be used for study.

Student Conduct:

I am expected to treat others with respect and not disrupt others during class.  I expect to receive demerits for improper language, inappropriate behavior and/or other violations of school policies .

Make-up Work:

I am responsible for all missed tests, assignments, etc. due to an excused absence. Make-up tests may be a different form of the test taken by the rest of the class. I am expected to arrange a meeting with Mr. Ross in order to schedule any tests or receive homework assignments in the event that they are not listed at www.MySci.net.   I also understand that STEN period may be assigned in order for me to keep pace with the class.  Failure to attend a required STEN shall result in demerits and/or detentions.

Requirements:

I am expected to bring the following materials every day to class: covered textbook, two pencils, a pen, writing paper, a calculator, completed homework assignment and another subject to study should there be any extra time available to me at the end of the regular class period.

ALL written assignments, unless specifically stated otherwise shall be word-processed.  If not word-processed, assignments shall be written in ink, in complete sentences, on one side of  loose-leaf paper, with the heading in the upper right-hand corner of the page.  Correct spelling and proper use of grammar is expected.  All Math problems shall be done in pencil.

Late assignments will be accepted for one-half credit if they are turned in no more than five (5) school days late.

Grades and Progress Reports:

Progress reports are sent home by the Guidance Department during the 3rd, 6th and 9th week of each term.  I expect to receive a progress report if my grade falls below 76%.

Grades are determined on a total point system.  Each item graded will be assigned a point value based on its importance. Your letter grade is determined by what percentage of the points you have achieved.

There will be a comprehensive semester exam that will constitute 10% of the semester grade.

Help is available to students before school during the STEN period, or any arranged time before and after school.  If possible, it is best to schedule help time in advance.

Grading Scale (lowest score shown for each letter grade)
        A     93.0
        B      86.0
        C     78.0
        D     70.0
        F     below 70%
